Diving Into Brotherhood

Originally when I joined Delta Sigma Pi, I did it for all of the common reasons: it looks good on a resume, it will help me to gain skills that will be useful in the future, and allow me grow alongside brothers. Never had I once thought what a huge impact this organization would have on me.

I just recently became a brother in Delta Sigma Pi this past Spring. When I was going through my pledge season, I found out that this organization is so much more than just a resume booster. Through this organization, I have made countless friends and also learned how to budget my time wisely. I’m sure this is common for many brothers in our fraternity but after I realized how much I had already gained just from my new member season, I wanted to find a way to give back to this outstanding organization.

For this exact reason, I decided to run to be the Vice President of Alumni Relations less than 48 hours after being initiated into the fraternity.

As a freshman, I was told by many people in my other organizations that running for an executive position is only available for juniors, seniors, or people who have been involved in the organization for a while. So needless to say, I originally didn’t plan on running for any position. However, through the support of my brothers and their constant encouragement to go for this opportunity, I finally decided that I would run for this position.

Running for a position is scary no matter what. What made this situation even more alarming was that I wasn’t even a member of this fraternity yet when I was writing the speech to give to all of my brothers. Constant thoughts ran through my head such as “Should I even be doing this? Will my future brothers support me even though I’m not a member yet?” and so on. But, I figured that even if I didn’t get the position, it was still a good opportunity just to get in front of my brothers and talk to all of them.

On April 22, I was initiated into Delta Sigma Pi. After a fantastic day spent with my brothers, I went right back to my dorm and continued to work on my speech and prepared for the next day: officer speeches and voting.

The next day as I walked into the room for speeches, I started to doubt myself. I was a newly initiated brother, these Deltasigs would want someone who has been in the fraternity longer than I have to take over Alumni Relations. Luckily my amazing brothers told me that I should just get up there and give it a shot because it wouldn’t hurt, so I did.

I’m beyond lucky to have these fantastic brothers in my fraternity. I was looking for a way to give back to the organization that has already given me so much and I was able to find a way to do that. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Delta Sigma Pi in this coming year and I’m thrilled to be able to help in some form.
